This book is the first of two projected volumes on the history of the Florentine guilds and guild politics in the fourteenth century. In the present work the author seeks to locate the guilds in the wider context of the development of communal politics from the late thirteenth century, when the guilds first emerged to assume a crucial role in constitutional affairs, to the end of the fourteenth century, when their claim to a significant share in communal government was definitively quelled.
