This volume is a collection of papers of which some have already appeared in print, whereas others have been prepared from unpublished lecture notes. The material is not entirely homogeneous, and the lecture notes are written in a lighter vein than the published papers. I believe nevertheless that the volume has a certain coherence and conveys a reasonably rigorous, though open-ended, theoretical structure.
