When the U.S.S. Forrestal was launched in 1955, the first of the supercarriers , it signaled the beginning of a new era in Navy thinking and strategy. Today, these enormous vessels - typified by the 91,000 ton, nuclear-powered Nimitz and Eisenhower - are the centerpiece of America's Navy. The Supercarriers traces the hi story of carrier aviation, from the takeoff of a spindly biplane from a wooden platform on a battleship in 1910 through the significant performance of carriers during World War II and in Korea and Vietnam. As aircraft became larger and more powerful, bigger carriers had to be built.
