"Moldovans" - the first English-language book dedicated to this intriguing eastern European suburb, highlights the age-old problem of the politics of identity and cultural transformations that Moldova experienced. During the last two centuries, this country was the object of various projects of cultural construction from Russia, Romania and the Soviet Union until it became an independent state in 1991. Charles King places the main place in the practice of political use of culture, through which language, history and culture become the object of manipulation of political elites. The author explores why some attempts at identity formation have been successful, while others have failed. He also shows why, in the case of Moldova, the identity design project succeeded in creating the state, but faced difficulties in building an independent nation.
