This two-volume edition is dedicated to the results of the first expedition of Sir Mark Aurel Stein to Central Asia (1900-1901). The results of the expeditions MA. Stein literally agitated the learned public of Europe and brought the scientist great fame, and for his works, the king granted the researcher in 1912 a knight's title. He collected a vast amount of exhibits and documents, determined the exact coordinates and detailed maps.
Aurel Stein composed three large sections of his reports in 11 separate books (the next two sections - Serindia, Vol. I-V. and Innermost Asia, Vol. I-IV.). Ancient Khotan is the first section. The edition consists of the main text and illustrations to it. The main area of this study is the region of the Khotan oasis in Eastern Turkestan (present-day Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the PRC).
The report contains the results of excavation of the ruins of ancient temples in Dandan-Oylyk and Hadalik, as well as photographs of numerous frescoes, sculptures, household items, ancient Buddhist texts written in brahmi, found in the south-western part of East Turkestan and economic documents by Kharoshtha, found in ruins of Niya , Endere and other oases near Khotan.
