as the despoiler of the world. In its place has risen magic, a naturally selected mutation that has been cross-bred
into potency. Seculars address male practitioners of the art as 'Lord Mage', and accord them great respect : female
magic-users are known as witches and are marginalised, barely-tolerated .
In the forbidding fortress of Arnor, one of the oldest Guild Houses, a group of mages stands around a black-clad
young man. After gruelling training at the hands of the stern Magemasters, young blacksmith's boy Grimm Afelnor's
Mage Staff clatters against the magically-sharp Breaking Stone but does not shatter...
Now, Mage Questor Grimm Afelnor fights for his House, for his Guild and for his disgraced family name. Alongside
the young mage are: his magical power: his illicit witch lover, Drexelica; his friend, Questor Dalquist: two demons
(one six inches tall, the other nine feet); and the army of a renegade user of the ancient and despised art of
Technology.
If the Guild's reactionary hierarchy ever discovers his unorthodox allegiances, Grimm knows he will be condemned
to disgrace and menial servitude. However, he knows how easily orthodoxy can turn into predicabilty: and to a Mage
Questor, a Weapon of the Guild, predictability can be a death sentence...
