As Shmidt himself observes in his foreword, even in 1933, when this edition of the book was published in Russia, it could not be considered up to date. Even more so, it cannot be considered up to date today. Nevertheless, the selection of topics and their treatment, as well as the numerous historical references, seem to justify its appearance in English. It is a beautiful book.
