The main aim of this publication is to present a method of design for slim floor construction comprising steel beams and concrete slabs located within the depth of the beams. The slabs are supported on a plate attached to the bottom flange of the beam. The design procedures are in accordance with BS 5950: Parts 1 (1990) Part 3: Section 3.1 (1990) for unpropped simply supported beams with uniformly distributed loading. Plastic analysis has been adopted for design of the cross-section at ultimate loads and elastic analysis for the serviceability condition. Design charts and explanation of their use for initial sizing has been included.
