In the early days of warfare there were no uniforms. Soldiers just wore the most practical clothes they had with whatever armor they can collect. In large battles, however, uniforms helped each side to tell friend from foe. They also gave the soldiers the sense of comradeship and loyalty.
There have been many types of uniforms. Styles have ranged from the very elaborate uniforms of the 18th century, to the practical, hardwearing styles of today. But the uniforms of every age can tell a story of the times in which they were worn.
