First conceived as a dissertation project, the present study has beneited from the support of a large number of people. It is a pleasure to thank all those who have been mentors to me over the course of my academic studies. Most of all I thank my advisor Cemal Kafadar, who has inspired my work and provided insightful guidance and unwavering support during my studies at Harvard.
