The Bear was purchased by the United States in 1884 because she was specially equipped to withstand treacherous ice conditions, and the scientific expedition led by Lieutenant W. Greely to the northern tip of Greenland was in trouble. The Bear was a St. John's sealer, built of oak, her hull doubled and redoubled and sheathed with ironbark. The rescue of Greely was the beginning of her long service to the United States.
