In the book of the famous Byzantinist Ernst Kitzinger, the problems of the formation of the art of the Mediterranean world in the III - VII centuries are explored. In the third century, Roman art was still in abundance; The new capital of Constantine in place of ancient Byzantium was not yet founded. And, although the city of Constantinople eventually took over the undisputed leadership in art, it was a slow and gradual process. Even in the fifth and sixth centuries we come across many important monuments that can not properly be called Byzantine.
The book deals with the stylistic features of the fine arts of the period: paintings, mosaics, sculptures, arts and crafts. The main objective of the author's assertion is "to trace the main lines of the development of artistic forms on the basis of a number of characteristic monuments during a particularly difficult and critical period in the history of Western art."
