First published in 1854. The last in a series of classical dictionaries, created under the editorship of the English scholar William Smith (1813-1893). According to Smith in the Preface, "The Dictionary of Geography ... was created, first of all, to illustrate Greek and Roman writers, allowing diligent students to read them in the most fruitful way." The book corresponds to its description: in two massive volumes of the dictionary, a detailed description of all important countries, regions, cities, geographical objects that occur in Greek and Roman literature is given, not forgetting those of them that are mentioned only in the Bible. The dictionary was reissued for the last time in 2005.
