Drama and trauma governed the eigtheenth century. The century opened in war, closed
in war, and experienced war throughout its decades. It was also an innovative century
in culture, politics, economics and science with the Enlightenment and its own backlash.
This was just as true in Scandinavia as England, France, and North America. Barton
demonstrates how the Enlightenment impacted Nordic countries, particularly politically,
and paved the way for nineteenth-century progress.
