I loved this book for its clever merging of two very different casts of
characters, the gradual unfolding of ancient mysteries, and superior
characterization. The contrast between the Captain's military culture,
and Boss's rebellious mix of academics and scavengers is sharp. Their
differences propel the action, lending authenticity to an otherwise
fantastic plot and setting. The slow descent of Boss's team through the
caverns milked the journey for every drop of anticipation, and set up
the history and relevance of the Dignity Vessels/stealth tech without
stalling the narrative. Glimpses into Boss's character were subtle and
insightful, painting her as a pragmatic idealist, who gradually earns
the respect of her team. Occasional mistakes, misjudgements and childish
behavior by Boss, the Captain and secondary characters made them both
credible and empathetic.
