It was commanded by Claire Lee Chennault and composed of pilots from the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, recruited under U. S. presidential authority.
In their distinctive shark-faced fighters, they took on the undefeated forces of the Empire of Japan and helped turned the tide of war in the Asian theater.
