After the conquest of the Romans by Gaul in the middle of the 1st century BC. e. Julius Caesar undertook two campaigns in Britain (55 and 54 BC). The systematic conquest of Britain by Rome began in 43 AD. e. and was completed mainly by the end of the 60's. Britain became one of the marginal provinces of the Roman Empire. Romanization was mainly southern, eastern and partly central region; West and North were almost not affected. The conquest was secured by a system of fortified points (Roman camps) and military roads. Along the northern borders were built Roman ramparts. The crisis of the Roman Empire affected the fate of Britain. Since the end of the III century. raids of Celtic and Saxon tribes began. In the early fifth century. Roman domination in Britain ceased. Britain again broke up into a number of independent Celtic regions.
