Addresses the question of word order variation in Romance languages - especially French - and in Germanic languages - especially German. The theoretical framework adopted is the "Principles & Parameters Theory of Transformational Generative Grammar".

The empirical contribution of this book is to treat three linguistically distinct phenomena - adverbs, pronouns and clause structure - in two typologically distinct classes of languages. The two main theoretical concepts explored are: a model of Checking Theory containing principles and parameters; and a new conception of phrase structure within X-Theory.
