Vocaloid is a technology for singing voice synthesis developed by Yamaha, and the name of this software application. The software allows users to input melody and lyrics in order to synthesize singing. In other words, with this technology, singing can be produced without a singer. Singing voice synthesis is produced by using fragments of voices recorded from actual singers, called the Singer Library. By changing this Singer Library, various voices such as Miku Hatsune and Gakupoid are able to be created.
Vocaloid technology
Vocaloid technology has improved dramatically and the expressions and audio quality of Vocaloids have improved to the point where it's hard to tell the difference between them and living human beings. Not only does it allow for users to easily create songs and cover songs for their enjoyment, but it is progressing to allow users to make full-scale musical pieces as well.
The mechanisms involved accumulates actual voices recorded from humans as Singer Library data. When note information (Score Editor) is inputted, the voice is generated in the "Synthesis Engine". Furthermore, in order to more closely replicate a human voice, dynamics and vibrato, breaths and others are added (from library) in order to have songs with a realistic human's vocals.
With the combination of this Vocaloid engine and characters (voice samples/Singer Library), there was a lot of software that went on sale since 2004. With Vocaloid, DTM creation that was only complete when vocals were recorded can now be created without recording the voice of an actual human being, but can all be completed inside of a computer. Since 2007, as the voices became characters with their own profiles attached to them, they became the main vocals and the stars of the show. Producers (P for short) are free to choose the vocalists to sing on their music as they wished. This is Vocaloid.
Vocaloid was a program that allowed only for the creation of singing synthesis, and one required a separate sequencing software to create the accompanying music. However, with 3, the creation of accompanying music became possible as well.
The new Vocaloid characters that keep emerging will encounter new melodies and sing these songs. With Yamaha's technological advancements, the software will become easier and more fun to use.
