On Easter Monday outside the General Post Office in Dublin James Connolly announced that there was no Irish Citizen Army and no Irish Volunteers. They were the Irish Republican Army. At the nearby Four Courts, Commandant Edward Daly told his men that "The Volunteers are now part of the Irish Republican Army." From that day through eight more decades the Irish Republican Army has waged war against the forces of the Crown, the Free State government, militant loyalists, and even within itself. The Volunteer is a history of the Irish Republican Army, its uniforms and weapons from 1913 to 1997 told through archival and rare photographs.
