Mark Denny, "Ingenium: Five Machines That Changed the World"
English | 2007 | ISBN-10: 0801885868 | PDF | 200 pages | 3 MB
This book clearly demonstrates the relevance of Classical Mechanics in understanding how complicated machines work. It would provide a good supplement to disillusioned first year undergraduates fed up of applying mechanics to the usual artificial situations covered in most mechanics text books of particles sliding down slopes or simple pendulums.
The solutions to the problems that Dr Denny provides are ingenious and provide genuine insight into how the various machines work. I would reccomend this book to anyone wanting to gain insight into how the complicated behavior of mechanical systems can be reduced to a few basic principles. The historical context is also interesting and a dry sense of humour pervades the book.
