Presenting a new approach to the study of religious ritual in ancient Egypt, Mu-Chou Poo describes the use and significance of wine in ancient Egyptian society, analyzes the iconographical and textual evidence of wine offering ritual from the earliest to the Ptolemaic periods and shows how, through connections to myth, theology, natural phenomena and specific physical properties, a simple object of daily use was charged with symbolic meaning and integrated into the religious system. Beyond the significance of wine, the study reveals aspects of the inner workings of the religious system.
