Art of the Stone Age was unknown until 1879 when the world-famous cave of Altamira was discovered. Then, little more than a half-century ago, interest in the art of Stone Age man arose. Each new discovery demonstrated that primitive man was not so "primitive" as we had thought; that his art was sophisticated in many ways with a freshness and in immediacy of approach that the twentieth century might envy.
