Islam is a way of life that has religious aspects, political aspects and cultural aspects, and each of the three overlaps and interacts. To do justice to a triple story of this kind presents problems that tax the ingenuity of any author—what to choose from the vast storehouse of the past, how to make it intelligible and meaningful. Of all religions, Islam is nearest in kin to Judaism and Christianity. In fact the alienation between the Islamic and the Christian worlds is more one of politics and economics than of ideology. Islam the religion is a system of beliefs and practices revealed to Muhammad, enshrined in the Koran and supplemented by a traditional record, the hadith, of the things said and done by Muhammad.
