Some series don't have to be read from the first book. This is not one of them. This third installment drops the reader right into the middle of an ongoing tale with little in the way of useful recap. Even having read the last two books, it took a while to get up to speed again. The story is split into alternating chapters with Archeth and Egar in one and Ringil in the other. As with the prior books things get very violent, quickly and often. In both halves of the story, the characters are constantly on the move, generally mowing their way through enemies or keeping one step ahead. Through this constant movement, the characters remain mostly static. Much of the development took place in the prior books and the secondary characters are fairly flat if not outright caricatures. The book focuses on the adventure side most of all and it does very well with it.

Because so much of the book relies on the prior novels, a new reader should start with those. For the readers who liked the first two books, this one is also bound to please.
