Laura Andersen "The Boleyn King: A Novel (The Boleyn Trilogy)"
Ballantine Books | English | May 14, 2013 | ISBN: 0345534093 | 368 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 3,7 mb
This seductive read is a majestic and dangerous historical what-if story (what if Anne Boleyn's son had lived, and what if Elizabeth still became Queen). The story follows people more than events and does not contain an exceptional amount of historical detail, but such details as are presented seem to be well researched. Character cast includes both known and imagines historical figures, mostly behaving in believable ways. Elizabeth remains formidable. Anne is alternately sympathetic and not.
I don't "do" plot spoilers, so you will have to read this yourself to "see what happens," but I imagine that you (like me) are in for a few surprises. I was sucked into this story in a surprisingly quick way. The intertwining of characters and plot-threads, and subplots is seductive and quite well done. I adored the way the author gave you a window into the inner workings of the minds of many characters, sharing various views and experiences (and simultaneously feeding you small bits of historical experiences and information).
And, yes, as with every book of this era, I find myself still rooting for Elizabeth, even when she's ruthless or formidable.
