This is the 6th book in the author's Karen Vail series (the first in the series isThe 7th Victim (The Karen Vail Series, 1) and it is a great way for people who have not read the first books to jump into the series. I have not read any of the earlier books in the series and the way the author structured this book, you do not need to have read any of the earlier books to really enjoy this book. Fans of the series are not left out in addition to seeing how Vail got her start in police work and the FBI, there are little vignettes in the book that relate to the earlier books in the series.

This book involves a serial killer that Vail has been chasing for 20 years so it starts very briefly in the present but then jumps back to 1995 when Vail was newly graduated from the police academy and works its way forward in time. Most of the book is a police procedural but there are some thriller elements to keep the reader turning the pages. I was interested the whole way through.

I really like the character Karen Vail, in part because I enjoy mysteries/thrillers where a woman is the main character and in part because Vail is an interesting character. She isn't super woman but she has good instincts and good training and uses both to work on her cases. I will definitely go back and read the rest of the books in this series.
