The object of this book is to examine the creation of the Moravian archdiocese, of which St. Methodius was the first incumbent, in the context of ninth-century papal policy in central and south-eastern Europe. the Sancta Ecclesia Marabensis—the name given by Pope John VIII to the new church in a letter sent in 880 to the Moravian ruler Svatopluk—was a new ecclesiastical province organised by the Apostolic See for the pastoral care of the Slavic peoples living beyond the eastern border of the carolingian realm. the new archdiocese was initially committed to the care of Methodius, the brother of the equally well-known St. constantine or cyril. together, they are regarded as the Apostles of the Slavs and creators of the Slavic alphabet.
