Prajwal Parajuly "The Gurkha's Daughter"
Quercus | English | July 15, 2014 | ISBN: 162365145X | 208 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 4,9 mb

Prajwal Parajuly has written an exceptional collection of stories which incorporate the Nepali culture, perspective and experience, as told by a variety of character's living in the North Indian region between the countries of Nepal and Bhutan. Depending on the story, the individual's residing in this region may be loyal to India as well as Nepal. Most are recent refugees while others are second generation from either Bhutan or Nepal. However, the last story is from the perspective of immigrants abroad trying to adapt to a new life in New York City (my favorite story of all) but regardless of perspective, age, caste or location, these stories are appealing for their universal themes.

Generally, I shun short story collections but this had glowing reviews, so I made an exception. Nearly all earned five stars because of their interesting characterizations, dialogue, plot and theme(s). I loved the originality this author exhibits. Her rich language makes you feel as if you are an invisible observer of all the action. Although we might not necessarily relate to the Nepali culture, each story presents a universal truth. The lesson or moral that results is one that every individual learns while traveling life's path. Some lessons encapsulated are: Promises made by someone in control are seldom kept; You can never go home again; You will always worry about your children no matter how old or how far away they may be; Things are never what they appear on the surface; You may physically relocate to run away from a situation, however, the problem often follows you; some debts may be repaid in full but you are forever indebted to the lender (and never borrow from family!). By the way, I have not spoiled the plot of any of these tales; since the author cleverly reveals these tidbits of truth at the very end.

These stories are in many ways timeless. Many contain great pearls of wisdom. While finishing some stories, I would recall a favorite O. Henry story or fable of Aesop. I not only recommend that you pick up a copy but I suggest that you may want to keep it in your permanent collection for future perusal. Yes, these stories are truly a delight. I look forward to Ms. Parajuly's future writing endeavors.
