When I first downloaded this book, I didn't know what to expect. Apocalyptic thrillers are my favorite genre, particularly Zombie books, but this one is the first one I recall reading that uses the global disappearance of the food chain as the beginning of the end. Typically, we read about human infections, EMP's, etc, so I wasn't sure how this was going to evolve.
I found the character generation was quite good, and some of the topics that were brought up made me do a Google search because the info was something I hadn't thought of before. I also thought Mann did a good job illustrating how we can go from trusting souls, willfully giving others the benefit of the doubt, to cynical and hardened survivors. His knowledge of firearms and preparedness is evident, and is clearly not a writer who writes about them because... well... you have to in a post apocalyptic thriller!
I look forward to the next book in the series, and I certainly hope that this genre from Mann is something he continues on with.
