Claude-Oscar Monet was born in Paris on November 14, 1840. He was the oldest son of a grocery store owner, who five years after Claude's birth moved with his family to Le Havre. In this city Monet began his studies and showed an early talent for art. From 1856 to 1858 he studied drawing under a certain F.J. Ochard. His first passion was for caricature and he was very successful at it. Then, under the guidance of the landscape painter Eugene Boudin, his first real master, he came to love painting outdoors, en plein air.
