cmiVFX has just released an incredible, brand new Houdini training video called "Houdini Cartoon Effect." The mentor for this video, Hirai Toyokazu, shows you how to make your work in Houdini look like a high-quality anime drawing and you'll also learn a variety of stylistic techniques including simple expressions, dynamic explosions and pencil effects. In addition to all of this, Toyokazu's techniques can be used to improve the quality and efficiency of your work when you're not making cartoon-style animations as well. The OBAKE Effect
"OBAKE" is a special motion blur effect that looks like the teeth of a saw are surrounding the moving object that you're working with. It's one of the traditional Japanese anime techniques. This chapter explains how to make an effect in the style of "OBAKE" using Houdini. Using this special motion blur allows you to create speedy animations with fewer frames and colors.
Solid Color Painting and Outlines
There are a variety of ways to create the outlines of the objects and Toyokazu explains them to you one by one. You can customize the outlines by using VOP network easily. For instance, it will more look like hand drawing by making a random thickness.
Explosions and Smoke
In this chapter you'll learn how to create an explosion with smoke by Pyro, and you'll learn how to make the effect much more dynamic by editing in a SOP network. Toyokazu explains how to convert the effect to Polygon by using OpenVDB.
Broken Pieces
Learn about controlling scattered pieces using the DOP network. This makes it easier to control the direction and timing of the pieces.
Painting Tones and the Diffusion Effect
This aim is to make cartoony explosions rather than the usual realistic Houdini output. It's very important to create an illusion of white color without using pure white.
Pencil Shading
This chapter explains how to make the image look like pencil drawings. It can adjusted to any situation. At the end of this chapter, Toyokazu talks about his favorite filter which is an effective filter not only for cartoonish images, but for any other type of image as well.
