Brand new for the New Year! cmiVFX has released a new video showing how to break up 2D digital matte paintings into 3D Cinema 4D scenes. Learn how to break your paintings up into special layers, perform paint restorations, and create your layering system to be used in Cinema 4D shaders. The creation of geometry in this process is unique and not always what you might expect in a 3D environment. Learn how to decipher what type of modeling you will need to use for each area of your new creation. When it comes to efficiency, nothing beats projection painting! Check it out at cmiVFX.com today!
Introduction
In this video, we are going to cover matte painting projections in Cinema 4D with the assistance of Projection Man. This will allow a 3d camera to travel into the image as if it were a complete 3D scene. Most matte paintings are flattened into one image layer, yet in our workflow we will need to divide the image up into several key layers. Objects with irregular shapes will require additional treatments using projection man coverage render altercations with either BodyPaint3D or Photoshop.
Image Analysis
Inspection of your master image is not nearly enough. All hero paintings will need to be broken down into segments. Mostly, following the foreground, middle ground, background rule is enough to get started. Then painting restorations of the image to allow for camera movement parallax will complete the process.
Projection Camera Setup
You have to start somewhere, and setting up your 3D scene to match your image resolution is key. If you do this, then your construction will go smoothly. Learn how to set up your initial environment in this chapter.
Creating Basics
In this example, we start with some foreground geometry so that we can test our scene setup. Once we solve both simple projections and some basic modeling adjustments, we can proceed with the rest of the scene.
Continuous Structures
This part of the video will either go well or not. It is a skill that is learned over time and you might not get so lucky in your first few attempts such as this video shows. During the creation of this video, everything went perfectly. This could take you a bit longer until you get the hang of it.
Scene Completion
Wrapping up the scene environment requires everything from Depth Of Field to Fog layering. We show you how, now it is your turn to play around with the final look you want to achieve. You can render out several examples quickly because of the efficiency of the scene setup.
Projection Man
When your camera moves past its native 2D parallax, you might see some areas that need projection painting fixes. We use the tool called Projection Man which was designed for this specific task. Learn how to make and save coverage renders to add additional textures to your objects while preserving transparency channels. You can use BodyPaint or Photoshop.
