If you had lived back in the nineteenth century, your home probably would have been very near one of America's hundreds of rivers, lakes, and bays. Before there were any railroads or automobiles the waterways were the "highways," and people used them as a means of travel from place to place. Settlements appeared along the shores, and many of these grew into villages, and even cities. From the very earliest days, boats of one kind or another were always to be seen. At the end of the Colonial period, after America had won the war for independence, most of our citizens lived in that part of the country bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the St. Lawrence River on the north, and the Allegheny Mountains on the west. A great deal of travel, except in the wintertime, was up and down rivers like the Hudson and the Connecticut, and through the sounds and bays along the coast which offered shelter from the stormy waters of the ocean.
