As if the name pairing itself isn't enough of an oxymoron,
Berlin-based newcomer Sugar Bytes claims that its new VST,
DXi and AU plug-in, Artillery, is "the first FX keyboard
in the world." FX keyboard? In an unconventional match-up,
Artillery is a keyboard-controlled multi-effects processor
that allows you to trigger and extensively modulate effects
parameters across a keyboard, essentially .playing. them
in much the same way that you would melodies. There are 11
effects categories to choose from, including Chorus, Delay,
Reverb, Phaser, Filter and Flanger, as well as a few specia-
lized ones like Loop, Amp, FFT (Fast Fourier Transforms),
Destruction and Micro Sampler.a real gem that granulizes
incoming audio or AIFF/WAV samples from disk and mutates
into a monophonic synth using the recorded material as
a waveform.

Operation is a breeze. After assigning effects to different
key zones, you dial in the emphasis that each zone will have
on its effect.s parameters, allowing you to do such things
as .play. filter openings or change directions of individual
sample segments on the fly. Parameters can be controlled via
MIDI or host automation and modulated by key position,
envelope follower or the Universal Modulator. This modulator
is quite powerful, featuring standard LFO shapes, a random
generator and a step sequencer (with a max 32 steps), which
I found a lot of fun in assigning to really oddball destina-
tions, such as the grain size of a sample. In a peculiar
twist, orders must be placed C.O.D. from the company Website,
as Sugar Bytes does not have distribution, nor does it handle
online payments at present. Think of it this way: You.ll have
plenty of time to work on your sonic ammunition stockpile
before the artillery rolls up.
