Number of Deaths 55: 50 passengers and 5 crew Cause(s)

Loss of control due to the destruction of primary control surfaces in the tail section,
which, in turn, was caused by aeroelastic oscillations initiated by abnormal clearances
in the vertical stabilizer attachments to the fuselage structure. The attachments were
found to be suffering from excessive wear in the pins and sleeves of the structured joint,
which themselves were of inferior quality.
