The Society of Artists of Taos (TSA), founded in Taos, New Mexico in 1915, broke up - in 1927. Subsequently, the tiny Taoist colony of art turned into an international center of art, a major phenomenon in the artistic life of America.

In 1893, Joseph Henry Sharpe, who decided to dedicate his life to portraying the American Indians, traveling to New Mexico, visited Taos. He was fascinated by the people of Taos Pueblo and landscapes. His impressions he shared with Ernest Blumenstein, with whom they studied painting in Paris.
In September 1898, Ernest Blumenstein and Bert Phillips, two young artists from New York, arrived in Taos. Planning to simply visit Taos, they were so fascinated by the valley and its people that they decided to stay. Both studied in Europe, and their work experience in the artists' settlements aroused the desire to create the same settlement in Taos.
Blumenshtein described his first impressions as follows: "Primitive people of this remote region collect their harvest in the sun and moonlight. Swarthy people, including Mexicans and Indians, are happy people, with happy children in a garden protected by mountains. " The people were irresistible. Native Americans lived for centuries in Pueblo in the vicinity of the village of Taos. In this peaceful, democratic society, history, culture, clothing and way of life were preserved and maintained throughout the centuries.
Ernest Blumenstein returned to New York for a while, and Phillips stayed.
The amazing landscapes, the culture of American Indians and Spaniards, and the lighting effects prompted Phillips to write to Blumenstein: "For God's sake, tell people what we found, send artists here." There is a lifelong job for twenty people. "
Blumenshtein and Phillips in their correspondence discussed the creation of a colony of artists in Taos. Blumenshtein also wrote to other artists in New York and Paris about Taos as "the beauty and artistic hope of northern New Mexico."
By 1915, Joseph Henry Sharp, Inger Irving Caus, Oscar Edmund Burninghouse and William Herbert Danton arrived in Taos, and with Ernest Blumenstein and Bert Phillips they formed the Society of Taos artists. The six founding members were known as the "Six from Taos". Inger Irving Kaus was the first president of the Society.
They organized traveling exhibitions of their works throughout the United States. Critics scolded artists for too bright colors, causing emotions and strong vibrations, saying that they clearly overdid it. Contesting the opinion of critics, the artists rightly remarked that they were never in the southwestern desert or Taos Pueblo.
