In February 1978 a committee headed by Prof. K. G. Ramanathanselected Prof. M. Venkataraman as the first Dean of the School of Mathematics and Computer/Information Sciences at the relatively new University of Hyderabad. Since most university mathematics departments specialised in the applications of mathematics, the committee envisageda school which would emphasize the more theoretical aspects of mathematics and statistics.
Consequently, when the first few selections for faculty positions were made some months later, those selected were almost exclusively working in the several areas of what is considered to be pure mathematics- algebra, number theory, topology, differential geometry, differential equations etc. Of course, the school expanded to include, in subsequent years, faculty working in P.D.E., Fluid Dynamics and several areas of Statistics and Operations Research and Computer Science.
