This monograph correlates the results of detailed linguistic research on the identification of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) tree names with the findings of palaeobotany concerning the history and distribution of species in the PIE homeland of western Asia/eastern Europe. The philological evidence is analysed in detail for 18 major categories of trees, viz. birch, conifers, juniper/cedar, aspen/poplar, willow, apple, maple, alder, hazel, nut tree, elm, linden, ash, hornbeam, beech, cherry, yew, and oak. It is argued that these 18 'arboreal units' involve 30 names and 41 species.
