Hosios Loukas (St. Lucas) - walled historical monastery, is located near the town of Distomo in Boeotia. This is one of the most significant monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art in Greece. Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Hosios Loukas is the largest of the three surviving monasteries of the Middle Byzantine period in Greece. It is noteworthy that it is devoted to a separate military prediction of St. Lucas about the re-conquest of Crete, which is marked by the image of Joshua on the outer wall of the church of Panagia. Joshua was seen as an example of a "warrior for faith," whose help was particularly effective in wars against the Arabs. The complex of mosaics of the period of the Macedonian Renaissance is well preserved in the Catholicos. The monastery was known throughout Byzantium for its rich decoration, covering all the surfaces. This album conveys an excellent artistic performance, harmony of colors and complex theological thinking in the preparation of the iconic program of the monastery - those are some features of high art that can be dated by the second and third decade of the 11th century.
