"Lawsonia inermis, hina, and mehndi are names in Latin, Arabic and Hindi for a plant with white flowers that grows in North Africa, the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia." Several medicinal properties are attributed to this plant - against bruises, headaches , angina and skin diseases, such as ringworm. The leaves have a cooling effect when applied to the skin and have long been added as a component to fragrant oils and ointments. However, its most well-known role is the source of a reddish-brown natural paint. This plant for many centuries has been used as a dye for cotton, wool and silk, and continues to be very popular as a hair dye and body paint, mainly on hands and feet.Today the most famous name of this plant is Arabic - henna.
It is not known for certain when and where the use of henna for skin design began, but there is ample evidence that this is an ancient practice. In Egypt, traces of henna were found on five thousand year old mummies, and in India rock carvings were found depicting a princess with henna drawings on her hands and feet. The prevailing theory is that the decorative application of henna began in Egypt. From there, the tradition is thought to have spread to the West to Morocco, and to the East to the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia. "
