In 1990, two centuries of domination ended in Black January, when Soviet troops opened fire on the civilian population of Baku. The following year, Azerbaijan declared its independence and began to restore its political and economic system. Former Communists and opposition leaders continued their struggle for domination. Audrey Alstadt uses both Russian, Azerbaijani and Turkish newspapers, magazines and scientific publications. Most of this material has never been used in other Western studies. The author considers two centuries of relations between Azerbaijan and Russia from the Azerbaijani point of view. It highlights key issues, actors, and documents of constant struggle against colonial domination from the moment of conquest to the political movements of the late twentieth century. Russian domination was reflected not only in the military, political and economic spheres. Also, there were strict restrictions on the forms of cultural expression, including the killing of leading intellectuals and the falsification of historical facts. Nevertheless, Azerbaijanis continue to obstruct the control of Russia, protecting their rich and ancient heritage with the help of the native language of education and art.
