Unlike the well-known ancient icon-painting schools - Novgorod, Pskov, Moscow - the Nevyan school arose and was formed only in the XVIII-XIX centuries. Its creators were the Old Believers, who rejected the church reform of the mid-17th century and fled from the northern and central regions of the country. They transferred to the Urals Ancient Rus with its centuries-old cultural heritage.
The album is a scientific publication, which first published 150 known only to specialists of works of fine art (184 color reproductions of icons, including fragments). The book also contains pictures of icon painters made in the last century at the dawn of photography, ancient landscapes of the surroundings of Nevyansk - the patrimonies of prominent Demidov industrialists and other rare historical materials found in Russian archives.
