Joseph Hess practices karate goju-ryu and Okinawan kobudo. He is a former US champion in contact karate, and at the time of writing, he worked at the police academy as an instructor in self-defense and working with a baton. In his book "Nunchaku in the case: for kobudo and police" Hess demonstrates and explains the "small gentleman's set" for the students studying the art of nunchaku - blocks, strikes and intercepts of nunchaku plus self-defense techniques. At first glance, other authors suggest the same thing in their books. However, there are differences.
First, a tangible part of the methods of self-defense from the nunchaku Hess clearly borrowed from the technique of a police baton - which, however, is not surprising for a police instructor. In general, in comparison with other authors, Joseph Hess tends to work at short distances and to use folded or, conversely, stretched in one line nunchaku in the manner of a stick, neglecting whipping strokes. In my opinion, this is far from the optimal way to use the nunchaku, but nevertheless, I believe that a person claiming a serious study of the art of owning a nunchaku should be able to use his weapons in this manner too.
Secondly, the book also includes such sections as "warm-up", "preparatory exercises" (ie exercises with nunchaku, not having combat use, but helping to master the weapon), "training exercises", "throwing nunchaku" ( Hess's book is the only one in which this topic is touched) and "throws with the help of the nunchaku". True, the technique of the last section seems to me not quite realistic - I would say that a good half of the throws proposed by the author can not be fulfilled if the enemy does not succumb. The same, by the way, you can say about some of the methods of self-defense - it is clear that they were created when very few people used to kick their feet in street fighting: during the reception, the opponent's hands are controlled, but the performer's groin is open for kicking.
