Professor A. Grünwedel owns the honor of the first attempt to give a systematic review of one of the main departments of Indian art - the Buddhist. This book already in the first edition attracted the attention of specialists, and the second, somewhat enlarged and revised edition, further strengthened Prof. Grünwedel is right to be considered one of the best connoisseurs of Indian art.
In general terms, the picture of the development of Buddhist art in India is represented by Grünwedel as follows: no significant monument of Buddhist art Grünwedel refers to the period before the III century. BC. e. the development of Buddhist art in India according to Grünwedel continues until the VI-VII centuries; in non-Indian countries, which, together with Buddhism, accepted its art, it continues to develop until the 13th-14th centuries; in the beginning in the course of the stone, then gradually it is replaced by wood, clay, metals, and art passes into the craft.
Of course, since the book was published in Oriental studies, a large amount of material has already been produced and a large number of specialized studies published on various departments of Indian art, new data on archeology, etc., and many of the points noted in Grunvedel's study may already be considered obsolete and controversial. However, the book will undoubtedly become interesting to everyone who is interested in the cultural heritage of Buddhism in India, as representing one of the significant landmarks of the development of Western science about the East.
