It is now clear that the history of art is connected by a multitude of threads with a wide variety of fields of knowledge, often very far from art. Traditionally, following the model established by Vasari in the sixteenth century, scientists were more interested in the origin of the paintings, the biographies of artists and the development of style. Art historians of the 20th century explored the role of patrons, market forces and the appreciation of works of art by contemporaries. But, despite this broader approach, the emphasis still falls on the period when the work was first created and the initial reception by the audience for which it was made. Alessandro Conti in his book traces another story, which is the "history of the work", i.e. What happened to works of art more than a century.
Hermeneutics showed that the interpretation is historically contextual, constantly changing and conditioned by the previous interpretation. The second must demonstrate that the preservation and subsequent life of paintings and sculptures - and sometimes their destruction - is a vital element of a broader cultural history.
