about the author
Baron Anthony Giddens (English Anthony Giddens, Baron Giddens, born January 18, 1938, London, England) is an English sociologist. Bachelor of the University of Hall in the field of sociology and psychology (1959), Master of the London School of Economics and Political Science; Doctor of Philosophy, Cambridge University (1974). He worked at the University of Leicester, Cambridge University; director of the London School of Economics and Political Science (1997-2003), where he is currently an honorary professor. Prize-winner of the Prince of Asturias (2002, social sciences).
Giddens is considered one of the most significant modern sociologists, he is the author of 34 books published in 29 languages. In 2007 Giddens took the fifth place in the list of the most cited scientists in the humanities. Known for its theory of structure and holistic original concept of modern societies.
Giddens' scientific activity can be divided into three periods. The first is characterized by the creation of a new vision of sociology, mainly in the field of theory and methodology, based on a critical interpretation of the classics. The main works of this period are "Capitalism and Modern Social Theory" (1971) and "New Rules of the Sociological Method" (1976). In the second stage, Giddens developed a theory of structure, synthesizing structural functionalism and microsociology. The books "Central Problems of Social Theory" (1979) and "The organization of society" (1984, Russian 2003), brought him international scientific fame.
The third period includes Giddens' interest in the problems of modernity, globalization and politics, above all the influence of modernity on social and political everyday life. He criticizes postmodernism and analyzes the possibility of a "third way" in politics. The main works of this period are: The Implications of Modernity (1990), Modernity and Identity (1991), Outside Left and Right (1994) and The Third Way: Updating Social Democracy (1998). In these works Giddens revises social theory and approaches to development and changes in modernity.
In the political sphere he appeared as a theorist of "new Labor" and "third way". In June 2004, for his services Giddens received a lifetime title of peer, became Lord and Barter of Southgate. Since 2005, he has been a member of the House of Lords of the British Parliament, representing the Labor Party.
He is on the board of various public organizations, including the Institute for Public Policy Research of Great Britain. Since 1985, he co-founded one of the UK's largest academic academic publishing house Polity Press Ltd.
