Documents of the Pentagon (or Pentagon Papers) - the common name of the collection "American-Vietnamese Relations, 1945-1967: Study" (United Study of Vietnam, 1945-1967: A Study), intended for intra-departmental use in the Ministry defense, but partially publicized by the American press in 1971 during the Vietnam War.
The creation of the collection was started in 1967 on the initiative of the US Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. The project involved army officers, civil political scientists and historians. The common goal was to write the history of the American government's decision on the Indochina issue, including decisions directly in the course of the war. The work consisted of 7,000 pages (more than half of which were occupied by various documents) and was not intended for promulgation in the near future.
The documents of the Pentagon became available to the public thanks to the analyst of the US State Department Daniel Ellsberg. Disappointed in the Vietnam War, Ellsberg, when dismissed from his job, managed to secretly copy part of the collection. He tried to offer these materials to members of Congress opposed to the war, and when this attempt failed, he gave the journalist Neil Shihan, known for his criticism of US policy in Vietnam. In June 1971, the Shihan newspaper The New York Times began publishing Pentagon documents, which caused considerable dissatisfaction with the Nixon administration. The documents indicated that the administration of the previous President, Johnson, was deliberately taking action to escalate the war, despite Johnson's assurances that the US does not seek to expand it.
The case of publication of documents reached the US Supreme Court, which ruled that American newspapers have the right to publish them. The promulgation of Pentagon documents increased the mistrust of American society to the highest power structures, and the documents themselves were used by the anti-war movement as another evidence of the insincerity of the American government in the matter of the war in Vietnam.
By now, the full version of Pentagon documents remains classified.
