He was born, in the family of the Venetian merchant Nikolo Polo, whose family was engaged in trade in jewelry and spices. In 1260, Nicolo, Marco's father, went with his brother Maffeo to the Crimea (to Sudak), where their third brother, also called Marco, had his own trading house. Later they moved along the route that Guillaume passed in 1253 In the winter of 1266 the brothers reached Peking and were received by Khubilai. He asked them to convey a message to the Pope asking him to send him preachers of Christianity. The brothers returned, met with the newly elected Pope Gregory X and took Marco with him again. The new journey continued from 1271 to 1295 g.Polo returned to Venice in 1295 and about 1298 was captured by the Genoese. His travel stories were recorded by one prisoner with him in the prison.

Description of life Polo in China rarely follows a chronological order, which is a problem in determining the exact route of his travels. But his description is quite accurate geographically. In the fourth book, Marco Polo talk about Russia, what he heard from other travelers.
