Thurston, Robert W. - American historian-Sovietologist. In 1996 he published in English the scientific monograph Life and Terror in Stalin's Russia. 1934-1941 (Life and Terror in Stalin's Russia, 1934-1941). In the final chapter of his work Thurston draws the following conclusions (see pages 227-233):
1. The system of Stalinist terror in the form in which it was described by previous generations of [Western] researchers never existed.
2. The influence of terror on Soviet society in the Stalin years was not significant.
3. There was no mass fear of repression in the 1930s in the Soviet Union.
4. The repression was limited and did not affect the majority of the Soviet people.
5. Soviet society rather supported the Stalin regime than feared it.
6. For most people, the Stalinist system provided the opportunity to move upwards and participate in public life.
